On A Diet? Use a Chef, Not A Dietician, to Prepare Your Meals

By Marty Gallagher There is no way around it. An effective nutritional game plan blends science with taste. Diet food stinks because the foods are bland, repetitive and unimaginative. Either that or they are trans-fatty acid, frozen TV dinner, nightmare meals sold as a healthy alternatives. Frozen diet foods contain more chemicals preservatives than the medical lab at your local hospital. Some people use willpower to overcome taste habits. Most people dont have (or desire) this iron-willed determination and drive for perfection. The iron ruler types tend to dismiss those who cant hang with 24-7-365 helpings of George Foreman-grilled chicken breast, rice and broccoli. (Ad infinitum ad nauseum) Iron Ruler types say You just dont want it bad enough! The sane way to develop an effective performance eating regimen is to get your nutritional science and facts together, then seek out food preparation tips from the worlds great chefs. We want to learn how to inject flavor and variety and imaginative flair into our everyday food preparation. Performance eating is a Purposeful Primitive phrase and could be called, beyond dieting. Dieting is all about calories: performance eating is about nutrients. Calories are certainly a part of the PE equation, but nutrient manipulation is synchronized with cycled weight training and cycled cardio. Get the three elements of the PP fitness triad lined up and moving in the same direction and reap optimal physical results in a minimum timeframe. We need do our own food preparation. To depend on mom or the wife or the girlfriend to make our meals is a major imposition and you lose the element of control. You become dependant on another for results. Besides were not talking rocket science. Assuming you have a propane grill a Weber grill, a stove and a skillet, how easy is it to grill a perfect steak, saut a perfect rainbow trout filet, steam shrimp in beer, hickory smoke a brace of beer can chickens on the Weber grill? These are easy to prepare and they are all diet foods people! So easy to prepare its ridiculous: we all need become miniaturized Iron Chefs. Culinary proficiency is easy! As any celebrity chef worth their kosher salt will tell you, what makes a dish taste great are fresh ingredients. Prepare them minimally. When an ingredient is freshly harvested (animal, fish, fowl, fruit or vegetable) the unique flavor of that ingredient is at its freshest and most vibrant. A top chef knows not to smother, muffle or dilute that unique vibrancy of flavor: just prepare it in such a well that the natural tastes are presented with minimum interference. Stand back and let that incredible flavor shine through! You know how to make a perfect steak? Buy the best meat. Find a butcher shop and get the good stuff. Some experts will coat the meat with a light coating of olive oil; most dont coat the meat with anything. Let the beef sit out on the kitchen counter for three hours before grilling to allow the intracellular fat to soften. Salt and pepper both sides. Throw the steak on a blazing hot grill and let it sit and sear shut on one side. After a minute or two, flip the steak and sear the other side not quite as longthis seals in all the good stuff. Place the seared steak on a cool part of the grill away from flames a let it roast until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 140-degrees for medium rare. How hard is that? Want to roast a perfect chicken? Slather it in olive oil or safflower oil, season it, and stick it in the oven for 45-minutes at 350. Fish fillets? Easy. Vegetables? Easy. The key is obtaining fresh ingredients and having the tools and an arsenal minimalist recipes ready to roll out and useeasy to prepare and all ready to eat inside 15-minutes. Purchase quality cuts of lean beef, seek the freshest fish and shellfish, fowl can be prepared dozens of ways, each tastier than its predecessor and all falling within the acceptable performance eating limitations. Fresh vegetables can be prepared in a myriad of delicious ways. Sautee thin cut vegetables in olive oil or safflower oil, bake sweet potatoes and yams, basmati rice is exotic and acceptable and deliciouson and on it goes. You can eat so many varieties of acceptable diet food that it boggles the mind. There is plenty of room for variety and imagination when it comes to imaginative preparation of what we can and should eat. One night grill filet beef medallions…then the next salmon, pan fried with baby onions and red peppers from the garden…scallops in extra virgin olive oil…beer can roast chicken…hickory smoked turkey…ditto vegetablesroasted, grilled, baked, sauted, steamed or flash fried…I would rather have a chef as my dietary guru than a clinical scientist, a dietician, RN or medical doctor scientist all too often reduce diet strategy to numbers (calories) and neglect any and all reference to the psychological aspects of food control. The most important single factor in successfully dealing with the nutritional leg of the Purposefully Primitive philosophy is psychological: you have to maneuver your psyche into a new perspective: taste can be built into diet foods and therefore there is no reason to eat forbidden foods. Some foods are easily converted into body fat: sweets, saturated fat, alcohol and man-made stuffpasta, pies, cookies, chips, etc. Some foods are virtually impossible for the body to transform into body fat: protein devoid of saturated fat, fibrous carbohydrates. We bias our food selections towards foods hard to transform into fat and shy away from foods that easily find their way to fat storage depots. We eat often. We eat those foods that will be used for energy, used to build muscle or excreted. By eating smaller amount more often you are never hungry and 80% of binges occur when the person is hungry. Since we know exactly what ingredients are in-bounds and out-of-bounds, we know what food types to steer clear of. We dont need a scientist or dietician to tell us what to eat, how much to eat or when to eat it. We know that already. What we really need is someone like Mario or Bobby Flay or Anthony Bourdian to show us a dozen ways to prepare a chicken breast, or how best to prepare a piece of fish and make these dishes so delicious we are totally oblivious to the fact that they are diet foods. I have eaten diet foods so delicious that youre thinking about second helpings within the first two bites. It tastes so good you instinctively glance towards the bowl or pan to see if there are any more left. If there is, you wolf down the piece on your plate. If there is no more, you slow down to a snails pace and savor every biteTop culinary experts can show us how to best assemble the approved ingredients. Id rather eat 500-calories of an outstanding dish than 500-calories of bland prison gruel. If my divine portion is slightly smaller than its bland-0 opponent, Ill take quality over quantity every single time. Spice It Up with Salsa

By Eric Vinje People have been spicing up their meals with salsa for hundreds of years. In fact, salsa, the condiment, not the dance, has been around for centuries and can be traced back to the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas of present-day Mexico. In the United States, salsa, which means “sauce” in Spanish, has outsold ketchup since the 1990′s. And there are just as many variations of salsa, if not more, as there are ways to make a good spaghetti sauce. For example, most American salsas contain tomato. But the tomato in a homemade salsa can be fresh and raw, cooked or even tomato paste. It’s up to the maker. (Originally salsas from Mexico didn’t contain tomatoes and mainly used chiles, tomatillos and ricado, a blend of spices.) Although hot peppers predominate, salsas can also be spiced up with ingredients such as cilantro, cumin and oregano. Some folks even add garlic to their salsas. Beans are another healthy variation to the salsa mix. Black beans tend to be the bean of choice for salsa makers because of their texture and taste. They are low in fat and also contain protein and fiber. A final advantage to beans: they “mellow out” the heat from the peppers added to salsas, particularly hotter chile peppers such as habanero, serrano or even jalapeno. Sweet salsa ingredients can include mango, passion fruit, papaya, raspberries, as well as lemon, lime, orange and chiles. Some people add plantains or even nuts. Pretty much any fresh sauce can be a salsa. The major traditional types of salsa include: salsa cruda, picante, salsa fresca, salsa rojo and salsa verde. Salsa cruda means uncooked and is made from finely chopped uncooked ingredients such as raw tomato, hot chiles, peppers, onion and cilantro. Picante means “hot and spicy,” and is usually just a thinner sauce than your typical salsa cruda. Salsa fresca means “fresh sauce” and is your typical American salsa. It’s usually a mixture of chopped tomatoes, chiles and onions. Salsa rojo literally means “red sauce” and its foundation is the tomato. Salsa verde means “green sauce” and it is typically made from tomatillos, which are green. (For the record, tomatillo is not a tomato, in spite of its name, but instead is a reportedly a relative of the gooseberry. It is a tart, green fruit with a papery husk. It resembles a green, unripe tomato in appearance.) Our offerings at Cosmic Chile show how many different kinds of salsa exist. Offerings range from a traditional salsa like Jose Goldstein’s XXX Garlic, made out of habanero peppers and plenty of fresh garlic, to something more exotic like Thai Jungle Salsa, which contains three types of thai chiles, lemon and soy sauce. Salsa is not only fun, it’s healthy. Their major ingredients are vegetables which are low in calories, rich in vitamins and are low fat. They are simple to prepare and an easy way to dress up grilled chicken, fish, meat or pork for a quick meal during the week. Salsa is also a great snack when paired with chips. So next time you run out of something to have for a quick, but fun dinner during the week, try adding a little salsa to your entree. This article was written by Eric Vinje of Cosmic Chile. Should I Buy My Teen A Vehicle?

By Nocita Carter Well, that depends if youre ready for your teen to become more independent and responsible. It also depends of course on your purse or wallet! Buying a vehicle for your teen is a big leap and presents lots of responsibility for your teen who is either at or approaching the age he or she can drive. You may want to consider some or all of these tips to help you in your decision on whether or not you should purchase a vehicle for your teen: 1) Consider having your teen work towards paying the down payment or entire purchase price for their vehicle. By doing this, your teen is able to learn responsibility and the value of money! Your teen will probably take good care of their vehicle if they are contributing or paying for the purchase of the vehicle. 2) You may want to purchase your teen an older used vehicle, probably a sedan that will be reliable for their needs. Your teen will probably be able to save money on insurance and fuel costs by purchasing an older vehicle. A sports car or 6-12 cylinder vehicle would not be an appropriate vehicle for your teen to have. They dont need it! Remember, their just getting started. Usually the insurance costs for older vehicles are cheaper than newer and sport car type vehicles for your teen. So keep this in mind before you and your teen consider purchasing a vehicle. 3) If you decide to purchase or allow your teen to buy a vehicle, consider having your teen pay either a portion or all of the vehicle maintenance costs and insurance. This will assist your teen in continuing to learn responsibility and how to manage their finances. Theyve got to learn sometime, so why not now! 4) If you and your teen have come to a decision to purchase a vehicle for them to use, do your research on the vehicle that would be appropriate for your teen. If you have access to the internet, thats a good place to start. If not, then review the newspaper vehicle classified section, vehicle trader magazines and any other resource you can find prior to purchasing the vehicle. Youll want to find the best quality, price and reliability for the vehicle that is being purchased for your teen. 5) Maybe youre not ready for your teen to have a vehicle yet. Thats okay too. However, you may want to have them work towards saving for the purchase of their vehicle for the future. You know they will eventually start driving, so why not start saving now! You will be able to have your teen learn the importance of saving and budgeting for items they would like to purchase in the future. So, after you and your teen have discussed the prospective purchase of a vehicle for them, hopefully youll be armed with enough information to assist you in making a decision that will work for you and your teen! Bachelor Degree – Marketing

By Michael Russell A bachelor degree in marketing is probably one of the oddest degrees you’re going to earn. Marketing is one of those things that takes quite a few skills and yet doesn’t really fall into any one category. You really have to be able to do quite a few things very well. That’s why the curriculum for a marketing degree is quite diverse. In order to get your bachelor degree in marketing you have to take your main marketing courses, which in most colleges are simply called marketing 1 through marketing 4. Each course usually takes two semesters. The marketing courses themselves usually teach the principals of advertising. They’ll walk you through developing a product and then developing an advertising campaign for that product. This usually comes in year four, where you will also have to do a major research paper on an established company and how they market their products. The analysis gets pretty in depth. But there is more to a bachelor degree in marketing than just taking marketing courses. As I said, many skills are needed to be a good marketer. You also need to be in possession of some pretty good writing skills. So a bachelor degree in marketing will usually require you to take quite a few English related courses including creative writing. This is absolutely critical if you’re going to be a good marketer. Marketing also requires that a person have a pretty good business background as marketing is a good part of business. So, a bachelor degree in marketing will usually also require you to take several basic courses in business such as economics and finance. You might even take some business management courses. As most students take 32 courses in the course of their four years in college, the above alone only takes up a small fraction of the curriculum. You have to figure four marketing 8 marketing courses, 4 business courses and 4 English courses. This still leaves the average marketing major with 16 courses left to take in his four-year program. How does he fill these in? Well, as with most bachelor programs, there are a number of “elective” courses that you can take. In the case of getting your bachelor degree in marketing, you’d probably want to take a course or two in psychology. Why? It’s probably a good idea to get a basic understanding of how people behave if you’re going to try to come up with a marketing plan or advertising campaign that is going to appeal to most people. It may not be a bad idea also to take some courses in basic math. Why? Well, you’re going to have to figure out advertising budgets and may need to be able to do some simple percentages. If you’ve forgotten this stuff from high school, you may want at least to take a refresher course. A marketer who can’t add is not a good thing to be. After you finally do get your bachelor degree in marketing, there are a world of opportunities open to the creative mind. Get ready for a very exciting life. Out of This World – Shamanism Healing

By Eric Cho Many of the ancient cultures of the world adhered to one or the other form of Shamanism. This is a tribal healing tradition where a Shaman is said to transcend the boundaries of the conscious world and travel to a world unbeknown to the ordinary man. Here, the Shaman converses with spirits and come back with secrets that allows him to heal others, foretell the future, control the weather and even ward off attacks. The word Saman is defined as a technique of ecstasy. A Shaman is a practitioner who is able to enter an altered state of consciousness where he can communicate with the supernatural. He acts as an intermediary between the world of man and the world of Gods and often has the power to descend to the realm of the dead. He leaves his body when he is in trance. This trance is induced by chanting, beating of the drum or passionate dancing. In the more unsophisticated cultures, Shamans even used to take to fasting, ingesting psychotropic drugs or even undergo torture to achieve the trance. As seen from the practices, Shamanism is based on the principle that the world is divided into 2 distinct parts that visible to the ordinary man, and that visible only to the man with powers. In the second part, there is a miraculous world populated by the spirits who influence the world of the living and who are always willing to help. The Shaman acts as a link between the two worlds and works for the benefit of his society. Shamans are therefore experts employed by animistic societies. Healing is the most important function of the Shaman followed by prophecy. Shamanism, in the larger sense of the word, is thus perhaps the oldest form of healing. It is a form of religious medicine that originated more than 25,000 years ago. The healing practices of most of the ancient cultures stem from a shamanic tradition. The Shaman is often credited with magical healing powers and is crowned as the religious or spiritual head of a tribe. He is called upon to treat the sick and to drive away demons. It is important to remember that in most ancient cultures, sickness was considered to be the result of demoniac forces acting on the individual. The difference between the ordinary man and the Shaman is that while the man is possessed by spirits, the Shaman controls the spirits. All this may lead one to believe that Shamanism is an occult practice that is buried in the past and that it has no significance to the modern man. But Shamanism is still practiced all over the world, although it has evolved into different forms. Native Americans are said to perform Soul Flights to heal. In Tibet, the Shamans use a drum to help them in soul retrieval. In Kerala, Shamans are closely tied to the temple and use amulets and music to contact the spirits of the nether world. Shamans in Africa often use hallucinogenic plans to induce trance. Shamanism has found a place in modern day healing because of the importance it places on the soul, mind and spirit. Shamanic healing includes relief from pain, anxiety, stress and emotional healing. It is believed that there is an inner Shaman in everyone a force that can be released if one is able o concentrate hard enough. Unleashing the power of this inner Shaman will help cure maladies that afflict us. Bank Employee Incentives vs. Mr. Public Consumer

By Debbie Hagan Banks rank their divisions, branches and employees as with every industry. Which branch is profiting. Which are losing? Which sell the most products/services? Which ones have the biggest increases/declines in each week, month, quarter, annually, etc. Its broken down by state, city, branch and even employee. Yes, many banks pay bonuses or commissions on services/products your teller cross-sells to you at your bank. If they hear you are going on a trip, they are rewarded when you purchase your travelers checks. Credit card applications can pay $30 to an employee. Refer a large depositor to purchase a CD and another $50. Many banks use the SIIM program provided by BVSinc.com. This software boasts it can increase fee income and offers employee/customer interaction tracking to assist in employee incentive programs. Clark Consulting offers something similar. Harte-Hanks applied its Allink Daily Deposit Builder which comes with a package of 80 pre-built business rules based on customer activity to the data at Fifth Third Bank. By analyzing what customers did weeks (and sometimes months) before they closed their accounts, Fifth Third was able to teach the program to recognize potential defection behavior, often 60 days in advance. Daily Deposit Builder also allowed Fifth Third to identify customers prime for additional products. Its opportunity program focuses on selling to those customers who appear likely to become more profitable, based on either demographics or increased account activity. says writer Richard Levey of Direct Magazine. His interview with Andrew Rosen, vice president and deposit product manager of Fifth Third Bancorp in Cincinnati, Ohio can be found at http://www.directmag.com/mag/marketing_sos_yields/. Fifth Third Bank measures teller performance on an individual basis. But the Cincinnati-based bank pays a set commission for each product or service sold. For example, a successful mortgage application reaps the referring teller $30, and a customer credit card application pays $25, said Bob Slaven, Fifth Third vice president and northeast Indiana retail regional manager stated in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette written by Sherry Slater. Full time tellers are expected to accrue at least $150 in commissions each month. Part-time tellers have a $75 goal. They start each month with a clean slate. “It’s very attainable,” Slaven said. Fifth Third employees, who receive bonuses on a quarterly basis, are paid the amount they earn, even if it falls below the performance standard. And there’s no cap on the upper end. Some tellers earn more than $1,000 a month merely from commissions, Slaven said. In March 2003, Fifth Third Bancorp reached an agreement with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions to change its internal accounting practices. In November 2002, regulators began reviewing Fifth Third that forced the company to take $54 million charge in the third quarter of FY 2002. The regulatory oversight ended in March 2004. What about overdraft protection services? Are bank employees rewarded for each Overdraft Protection application customers fill out? What about the much talked about courtesy bounce protection programs? Are branch managers rewarded for increased fee income? Who is auditing Fee Income at our nations banks? Lies, Fries and Alibis – I Am Not Lovin’ McDonalds!

By Julia Havey Please, allow me to explain. I ran across a banner today that said “Are you morning impaired?”. My answer; YES! I am the first to admit that until I get my smoothie, read my emails and get settled in, I am NOT a great “morning person”, so I was interested in seeing what this was all about, it said to go to www.morningimpaired.com Imagine my surprise and shock when I learned it was a McDonald’s site! I would like for you to stop reading and take a look at it, then come back and let’s discuss! OK..there is NO cure for being morning impaired..but can fight it?? Then, our attorney Mark Markham tells us that our coworkers say late nights of partying have us in trouble with our boss, and thank goodness he has our ‘heiny covered’ with the excuse generator 3000! That is what generated the email I got that actually looks like a doctor’s prescription! Cute. Clever. Perhaps a novel way for employees to waste time at their computuers rather than working (my personal favorite for that is MonkEMail from Career Builder) but I can’t help but ask, regardless of what a clever marketing idea this may be; is there an excuse for eating McDonald’s in the first place? I have a THREE year old Happy Meal. (Yes, you read that correctly, it is NOT my 3-year old’s happy meal–I kid you not!!!!) I used to spend a lot of time talking to people at my live seminars about the dangers of fast food, but now I save myself a lot of unnecessary words just by pulling out my 3 year old Happy Meal and letting the folks see for themselves why it may not be such a good idea to consume McDonald’s food – it’s neither “happy” nor a meal for starters! When I was recently in NYC for a taping of the Oprah & Friends XM program of Dr. Mehmet Oz, I brought my Happy Meal for him, along with a 3 week old sliced russet potato. He couldn’t believe that my Happy Meal was 3 years old and had NO mold, NO mildew, NO rot, NO deterioration–it was just hard but still smells like McDonald’s AND your fingers still get greasy and salty to the touch when you hold the french fries! Seduce Beautiful Women Easily Like A “Master Pick-Up” Artist

By Kenneth Oboh What is the Number One quality that you have to have as a man if you want to be seductive to women? You have to make them laugh. We have all heard that women love a man that can make them laugh but as you may already suspect, there is more to attracting and seducing women than just making them laugh. I’m sure that you have made many girls laugh in your lifetime, but did you get the feeling that there was something you were missing? That somehow, you weren’t getting the response of attraction from the girls that you were trying to generate. I’ve been there myself, many times. And every time someone would say to me, “women live a man who can make them laugh,” I got very confused because I had no problem making girls laugh, I JUST WASN’T GETTING LAID by trying to be funny! You see, after several years of trying to figure out what I was doing wrong with my humor, I finally found out what was missing. Like 99% of guys out there, I was using the wrong type to try and create attraction with women. I found that there are different types of humor, and I’ll show you which type women find seductive and which type makes you look like a “freaking idiot clown” in front of girls you’re trying to impress. Think of the James Bond film character. Think of Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise. These men all have one thing in common, they’re international sex symbols to millions of women. Now think of top comedians like John Candy and Steve Martin. Are they funny? Yes, of course they are. Are they sex symbols? Don’t think so. Now, if you study the James Bond type of character, you will notice that he has a tremendous sense of humor. He brings FUN and EXCITEMENT to his interactions with women. He always has a smile or “cocky smirk” on his face when seducing women, HE LAUGHS AND JOKES WHEN FACING DEATH! Are you beginning to see which type of humor attracts women and which type just makes them laughAT THE IDIOT being funny? You see, the difference is this: if you tell good jokes and laugh at YOURSELF a lot, you’ll just be Mr Funny Guy to women. End of story. But the secret to having and “projecting” the type of humor that is attractive and seductive to women is to TEASE her. So instead of focusing on the clever little joke to make her laugh, use something funny about HER to make her laugh. When you make women laugh about themselves, you trigger a strong attraction mechanism that they find irresistible. One of the reasons why this formula works so well is that people find THEMSELVES more interesting than everybody else, it’s just basic human nature. But with women, this is even more amplified. You see, a lot of those goofy, idiot type funny guys focus their time laughing at THEMSELVES. They hardly ever “tease” the woman, and that’s why she can’t see them in a sexual way. I bet you anything that if you think about every woman in your life who’s ever said, “You’re a nice guy but I don’t see you in a Boyfriend kind of way,” the major reason for that outcome is that you hardly ever teased and made fun of her. Nice guys, even FUNNY nice guys make the mistake of “worshipping” women they’re attracted to. So they may say “funny” things to make the girl laugh, they may even make fun of other people in coming up with jokes, butthey actually go out of their way to AVOID making fun of “the girl.” Now women sense this immediately and put the guy into the funny “friend” box. He’ll be the guy she hangs out with to have a laugh but nothing more. The guy who ends up “seducing” her will be the guy who’s not afraid to point out her “flaws” (in a funny way) and make fun of her and tease her about them. So adopt this principle now and start doing this in your interactions with women you meetand you would be AMAZED by the response you get.
